In my opening lecture of our Men’s Studies fall semester, we shall examine the place of Superman as an oppressor of male rights with special reference to the meaning of externally exhibited underwear.
Superman is an almost universally loved character. He rescues. He speeds. He tames technology. He is sensitive. He needs wardrobe assistance, but nonetheless manages to pull off his style, whatever it is. In short, he is all things to all people.
Note the subtext here, that if you are a normal mortal male, you are a lesser being than Superman even when he is sleeping. It’s unwitting, I understand, but this goody-goody alien is showing us all up. Why am I held to a standard beyond my physical and mental capabilities?
Superman gives women the message that men are all losers. This dude must be stopped. If only I knew how.
